Farm Animals
Hollybush Veterinary Group was largely founded upon the treatment of farm animals and farm work remains a core part of our practice to this day.
Over the years livestock farming has seen many new techniques and practices and these changes are reflected in the veterinary services we provide to farms over a wide area of South Shropshire and parts of Worcestershire and Staffordshire.
We aim to provide a modern up-to-date veterinary service to our farm clients while retaining the personal touch and care forged over many years.
Traditional emergency cover for all veterinary emergencies on the farm is backed up by routine and advisory visits to help to maximise animal health and production. At the same time statutory testing on behalf of the State Veterinary Service and helping provide farm assurance are other important aspects of our work.
Dairy Cattle
Routine (fortnightly or 4-weekly) visits are available to provide fertility work and other routine procedures. We use an ultrasound scanner allowing early pregnancy diagnosis and aiding in the diagnosis of fertility problems.
We use the Interherd computer program which allows analysis of your own herd's fertility, mastitis and production data, allowing us to help you to maximize your herd's health and productivity.
We have close links to the Veterinary Laboratory Agency (VLA) at Shrewsbury who provide veterinary diagnostics for farm species backed up by vets who are qualified and willing to help in the diagnosis of particular disease problems and syndromes.
As farm assurance becomes increasingly important we can provide Herd Health Plan (HHP) via the NDFAS - approved BCVA HHP. We aim to make these useful for the health and productions of your herd, as well as enabling you to "tick the boxes".
Beef Cattle
Routine work involving fertility management is increasingly important to achieve a tight calving pattern. We have recently formed a link with vets at the University of Liverpool who are able to examine stock bulls for fertility before the breeding season begins. Early pregnancy diagnosis is available using an ultrasound scanner to ensure the bulls are working properly.
In addition to attending emergencies we are involved in investigation and diagnosis of disease problems sometimes in conjunction with the Veterinary Laboratory at Shrewsbury.
Farm Assurance schemes are provided through the BCVA Herd Health Plan and as with dairy cattle we aim to make these useful to the management and health of your herd as well as fulfilling the assurance criteria.
Sheep
Lambing time still obviously sees the most veterinary activity with our sheep farmers. As well as difficult lambings we are involved with the diagnosis of the cause of abortion, ewe health around the lambing period and lamb survival.
The Veterinary Laboratory Agency at Shrewsbury is well placed, allowing the rapid analysis of fresh specimens for accurate diagnosis, particularly in cases of abortions.
In addition to this seasonal work we can help with preventative measures to maximise health and production of your flock with or without the application of a flock health plan.
We partake in the national scrapie plan, sampling and bolusing pedigree stock to identify their genetic resistance to the disease.
Pigs
We look after several pig herds and each is a member of the Farm Assured British Pig scheme. This gives us regular contact with each herd, allowing monitoring of pig health and production.
Diagnosis and treatment of new diseases and conditons is aided by specialist laboratories both locally and nationally.
Small Holders/Hobby Farmers.
Our work with Small Holders varies from giving basic advise on husbandry through to treating a wide variety of species e.g. llamas,
alpacas, goats, poultry, ducks, geese, etc.
We also aim to have regular small holder/hobby farmer meetings to discuss common problems, standard treatments and any new diseases or issues e.g. Bluetongue, etc.
